Transforming Futures: IKEA Foundation CEO Supports Lila Poonawalla Foundation's Mission to Empower Young Women

 Talented yet financially disadvantaged girls from Pune district are on the path to pursuing careers in science and postgraduate studies, thanks to the scholarships provided by the Lila Poonawalla Foundation (LPF). The foundation, known for its commitment to educational empowerment, recently hosted an event where these scholarships were awarded to deserving recipients.

Per Heggens, CEO of the IKEA Foundation, attended the event with his wife Karen, underscoring his long-standing support for LPF, which has spanned over a decade. Heggens spoke passionately about his commitment to supporting women who face financial challenges in their educational journeys. The IKEA Foundation, linked with the Stichting INGKA Foundation, which owns IKEA Group, plays a crucial role in offering educational assistance to girls in various countries.

Lila Poonawalla’s Vision

Lila Poonawalla, a renowned corporate leader and co-founder of LPF alongside her husband Firoz, highlighted the profound impact of the foundation’s scholarships. She shared how many women who have benefited from LPF’s support have gone on to build successful careers in leading organizations, contributing not only to their families but also to broader societal progress in environmental and economic areas.

Mission of the Lila Poonawalla Foundation

Priti Khare, CEO of LPF, reiterated the foundation’s mission to transform academically gifted but economically disadvantaged young girls into confident leaders. Through merit-based scholarships, skill development programs, counseling, and mentoring, LPF has supported 12,800 girls over the past 27 years, with assistance from corporate partners and donors.

A Day of Inspiration

The event was a source of inspiration, as 128 scholarship recipients, many from modest backgrounds such as families of drivers, farmers, and single parents, received recognition. LPF plans to expand its reach this year by awarding scholarships to over 1,000 young women in regions including Pune, Wardha, Amravati, Nagpur, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
